Many students wait months before they speak. They say: "First I need to learn all the grammar." This is a big mistake. You do not learn to swim by reading books about water. You get in the water.

Can I speak English if I know only a few words?

Yes! With 20–30 words you can already say who you are, what you want and what you like. Short sentences are real English. "I want coffee, please." is a complete, correct sentence.

Why should beginners speak English from the first day?

  • Your mouth gets used to English sounds.
  • You remember words faster when you say them out loud.
  • Every small sentence gives you confidence for the next one.
  • You stop translating in your head, step by step.

What to say in English on your first day: 10 easy sentences

  1. "Hi, my name is …"
  2. "I am from …"
  3. "I live in …"
  4. "I am a … (teacher / driver / student)."
  5. "I like coffee."
  6. "I don't understand."
  7. "Can you say it again, please?"
  8. "Can you speak slowly, please?"
  9. "How do you say … in English?"
  10. "Thank you! Have a nice day."

Sentences 6–9 are your "rescue phrases". With them, you can continue any conversation, even when you do not understand.

How to stop being afraid of mistakes in English

Mistakes are normal. When you make a mistake, people still understand you. Mistakes even help your brain remember the right form faster. Say: "Mistakes are OK. I am learning."

What if people do not understand me?

Say it again slowly, use a shorter sentence or show with your hands. Communication is the goal, not perfect grammar.

How to practise speaking English alone

  • Say 3 sentences out loud every morning.
  • Record a 30-second voice message about your day and listen to it.
  • Describe what you see: "This is my kitchen. The window is big."
  • Talk to yourself when you cook or walk.

Frequently asked questions

How many words do I need to start speaking English?

You can start with 20–30 words. Learn them in short phrases, like "I want…", "I like…", "Can you…?", and you can already speak.

Should I learn grammar or speaking first?

Do both together, but start speaking from day one. Learn grammar inside phrases you say every day.

How can I speak English if I have no one to talk to?

Speak to yourself, record voice messages, and describe what you see. Later, practise with a friend or an online partner.
